How to Create a Genealogy Website | STEP-BY-STEP

THIS POST MAY CONTAIN AFFILIATE LINKS

I started my Genealogy website in August of 2001, and at the time I had no idea it would change my life. Back then, my biggest goal was to figure out how to upload all my family history information to my website.

If you’re looking to start a Genealogy Website for cheap, then Bluehost for your hosting needs may be your answer. Bluehost is a great web host and I personally have had a great experience with them.

You may be thinking, “Well I can just start on Blogger for cheaper.” NOPE…Don’t do it, you want to own all your content. There are so many reasons for why a Blogger/Blogspot blog is a really bad idea, and why you should instead setup a WordPress blog on Bluehost.

Should my Genealogy Website be Self-Hosted?

Yes! You want the ownership and need the flexibility to make it yours. If that makes you nervous no worries. I will walk you through every single step.

There are many reasons for why you may want to choose Bluehost for your Genealogy Website.

These reasons include:

  • It’s easy to use. Yes, ANYONE can create a Genealogy Website easily with my tutorial below. Bluehost makes it very easy to create a WordPress blog.
  • Tech Support is offered by Bluehost web hosting.
  • Bluehost is extremely affordable and they offer cheap web hosting. You can have a blog of your own and the only real expense you need to pay is the cheap blog hosting which starts at just $2.75 per month.
  • You get a FREE blog domain.
  • WordPress through Bluehost is FREE.
  • You will be self-hosted. If you want to monetize your blog, then you will want to be self-hosted.

Start Creating Your Genealogy Here with Step-by-Step Instructions

If you’re looking to start a Genealogy website for as little as possible, then BLUEHOST for your hosting needs may be your answer.

There are two things you absolutely need to create your own website.

  1. You need a Domain Name (example: flickingerfamily.com…find an available domain name available to you) (Also covered below)
  2. You need a Host Provider (Bluehost… I completely understand that our genealogy site is not a business but a labor of love. Why not do it as in-expensive as possible)

Step 1. CLICK THE LINK TO SIGN UP FOR BLUEHOST

STEP 1a. SELECT GET STARTED NOW

STEP 2. SELECT YOUR PLAN

You can absolutely operate your genealogy website with the basic plan.

STEP 3. REGISTER YOUR DOMAIN NAME WITH BLUEHOST

You have two choices here. You can select NEW DOMAIN or I HAVE A DOMAIN NAME.

For our instruction we are working under the assumption that you don’t have a domain name yet. This is the spot you will put the name you want that will be your website address.

THIS IS THE FUN PART!

You get to pick your name! Think about what you want your domain name to be. This can be tough, and I would give some serious thought to this. It can be as easy as {yourname}genealogy.com, {yourname}ancestry.com, {yourname}familytree.com or any variation. Remember: You want to consider that people may type this so you may want to be careful its too long (bad…..sweattgenealogyisthebestthingever.com)(good….sweattgenealogy.com). Think clean and easy to share.

As an example, one of my surnames is Flickinger…I would be looking for a website somewhere along the lines of flickingergenealogy.com, or flickingerancestry.org or maybe flickingerfamily.com etc. If you have any questions, feel free to drop a message in the comment box below and I will help.

STEP 4. CREATE YOUR ACCOUNT WITH BLUEHOST

The account information at the top is straight forward. I want to zero in on the Package Information in the center of the page.

Again, for a genealogy website the BASIC PACKAGE is perfect. Additionally, I personally don’t think the other services are necessarily.

If you do this, you can get a FREE domain for the first year as long as you buy 12 months worth of Bluehost web hosting. This makes it well worth it to sign up for at least 12 months of hosting as you will be saving a good amount of money this way. You also get a cheaper monthly price when you buy at least 12 months of hosting, so the free domain just makes it even better.

If you want an even better deal, the best value would be purchasing a 36 month plan, as your monthly rate is much lower over the long run. If you decide to get the free domain, just continue to the next step as you can buy your hosting and get the free domain all in one step.

NOTE: This is an alternate step if you chose to purchase your domain name from a different provider (i.e. GoDaddy, NameCheap, HostGator)

Connect your domain and your hosting

If you buy your domain through Go Daddy, then you will need to connect your domain to your hosting account. Go Daddy has a full support page for setting nameservers for your domain names.

How to modify your DNS Nameservers when you are using Go Daddy for your domain and Bluehost for your hosting:

  1. Log into the GoDaddy.com Account Manager.
  2. Select Manage Domains from the Domain Names drop-down menu or the Manage Your Account list.
  3. Select the domain name you wish to modify using the checkboxes and then click Set Name Servers.
  4. Enter your updated name server information in the spaces provided under the blue Name Servers heading on the right side of your page and click Save Changes at the bottom. Your entries should look like this: ns1.bluehost.com; ns2.bluehost.com.

You will then need to add the domain you bought (such as through GoDaddy) as an addon domain to your Bluehost web hosting. You can do this by clicking on “Domains” when logged into your Bluehost web hosting account and then clicking on “assign.” Follow the steps and it is very easy!
